The Sabancaya volcano (its name means “tongue of fire” in the Indian language Quechua) is located in the southern Peruvian Andes and is one of the most active volcanoes in Peru.
The stratovolcano is covered with several glaciers and is located in the saddle between the older stratovolcanoes Ampato (6288 m) and Hualca Hualca (6025 m) and is the only one of the group that erupted in historical times.
Sabancaya is one of the volcanoes in South America with the oldest recorded history of eruptions.
Historical records of Sabancaya eruptions date back to 1750, but his name already appears in written reports from AD 1595, suggesting that it was also active on or before that date.
