The pandemic has proven challenging for digital nomads, people who travel the world and work remotely. With countries closing their borders and air travel severely restricted, working overseas has become extremely difficult, if not impossible, for Americans.
And with some destinations allowing foreign visitors, travelers from the US may still be banned as coronavirus cases continue to rise in the US.
There are exceptions, however. Some countries are welcoming working travelers, including Americans, back despite the pandemic.
Antigua and Barbuda
Remote workers who earn at least $ 50,000 per year can live and work in the islands of Antigua and Barbuda for up to two years under the country’s Nomad Digital Residence program. The cost to apply is $ 1,500 for a single applicant, $ 2,000 for a couple, and $ 3,000 for a family of three or more people.
“Visa holders can travel in and out of the country at will for the duration of the visa, but they must maintain accommodation in the country,” the program said on its website. It is also advised that “Applicants may not work for any company in Antigua and Barbuda or generate income from any company in Antigua and Barbuda.”
A negative coronavirus test result is required to enter Antigua and Barbuda and will be received within one week of arrival. All arriving passengers are monitored for up to 14 days to ensure they do not develop symptoms.
The small island of Aruba launched its One Happy Workation program in September. The remote work visa allows U.S. visitors to stay up to 90 days by booking a package deal at a participating hotel, villa, or condominium.
According to the Aruba Tourism Association website, no registrations are required to book a participating stay. Depending on the accommodation chosen, program amenities include special rates, free WiFi, breakfast, all-inclusive food and drink, and much more. All US citizens with a valid passport for their stay can book a “job” with a participating property. On the One Happy Workation website, you can browse the options that range from hotel rooms to apartments.
The Republic of Estonia digital nomad visa, which will be introduced on August 1 after years of development, allows foreigners to stay in Estonia for up to a year.
Applicants must have a gross monthly salary of 3,000 euros (approximately $ 3,530 USD) or more from a remote work job to be considered for the visa. This is an extension of the Estonian e-residency program for foreign entrepreneurs.
“We saw that there was a kind of lack of opportunity [digital nomads]So we wanted Estonia to solve the problem, ”Ott Vatter, executive director of e-Residency, told the Washington Post. “Estonia wants to be the hub for these types of new entrepreneurs that we see trending around the world.”
Since the Estonian Parliament approved the program in June, international applicants, mainly from the US, Canada, Russia and Asia, have completed the online application for either a Type C Short-Stay Visa or a Type D Long-Stay Visa.
Currently, Estonia does not allow Americans to visit the country for tourism, but they are allowed to enter for work or study. Upon arrival, foreigners must be quarantined for 14 days.
Shortly after the borders were reopened to international travel, Barbados launched a program that allows visitors, including Americans, to stay on the Caribbean island for up to a year without a visa.
The program, known as the “Barbados Welcome Stamp,” was created to bring remote workers into the country.
“The aim is to attract remote workers. The government needs to put a bill in parliament that will remove local income taxes that normally arise after six months,” the Post reported.
The online registration fee is $ 2,000 for individuals and $ 3,000 for families. Applicants must certify that they earn an annual income of $ 50,000 or have the means to support themselves during their time in Barbados.
Anyone traveling to Barbados for work or pleasure during the pandemic will need to follow new travel protocols.
On July 16, the country of Georgia announced a new program that allows foreigners to work remotely.
“Georgia has the image of an epidemiologically safe country in the world and we want to take this opportunity,” said the country’s economy minister, Natia Turnava, in a statement. “We are talking about opening the border to protect the health of our citizens, but on the other hand bringing citizens of all countries to Georgia who can work remotely.”
Applicants must provide proof of employment and consent to self-quarantine for 14 days to be considered for the program. Applications should be available soon.
American travelers are currently banned from entering Georgia unless they are granted a long-term visa of at least six months, are traveling on business with a special permit, or are the spouse of a Georgian national.
Travelers from the USA are allowed to visit Jamaica. However, the entry requirements vary depending on your home country.
All Americans must have an approved travel permit prior to their trip or they will not be allowed to travel to Jamaica.
Currently, visitors from Florida, Arizona, Texas, and New York are classified as high risk states by the Jamaican government and must provide evidence of negative Covid-19 PCR tests from an accredited laboratory in order to receive travel authorization.
People who identify themselves as business travelers in their travel authorization application will receive a test for the novel coronavirus upon arrival in Jamaica.
“We worked with IATA to ensure that it was part of the airline’s check-in protocols that you would be required to present this permit when you come to Jamaica,” said Donovan White, Jamaica’s director of tourism.
White says most travelers can get a 30-day visa upon arrival, but can apply for a longer stay visa to enjoy more of what Jamaica has to offer to digital nomads.
“There is so much history and folklore in Jamaica. Anyone who is a nomadic traveler can write a storybook about an extended stay in Jamaica, ”said White.
