The Art of Wood Statue Carving

Aug 27

Wood statue carving is an extremely ancient art. It's a wonderful method to commemorate a loved one. It's a kind of woodworking. It is typically done using a chisel or cutting tool. Traditional methods require two hands for holding a chisel, or mallet. The end product is a wood figurine or statue with sculptural ornamentation.

Gregor Erhart

Gregor Erhart was a late Gothic artist who studied in the workshop of his father. The father of his, Michael Erhart was an Ulm sculptor who was employed between 1469 and 1522. Erhart was the second-highest sculptor after Hans Multscher in his profession and also helped to train the student Tilman Riemenschneider who would later practice in Wurzburg. It is difficult to distinguish Gregor Erhart's early work from that of his father, however it is clear that the two had some close collaboration on the Blaubeuren Altarpiece that is an outstanding piece of art in the Ulm style.

Erhart created sculpture of the naked ascetic Saint. Mary Magdalene around 1515-1520. The sculpture was made of lime tree wood, but the statue was later reinterpreted in the Renaissance period as an example of a nudity which made the statue appear almost profane. Erhart's style was also influenced by the rinascimental style which is the hallmark of the Renaissance.

Giles Newman

Giles Newman originally trained as a graphic designer and photographer before turning to wood carving. Since then, he has made spoons, jewelry and statues made of scraps of wood from North Wales forests. He markets his work internationally and teaches his craft in workshops in the UK. This article will explore his artistic process and highlight the works he has created.

Newman began wood carving as a childhood dream. Although he was living in the city, working as a graphic designer he would often escape to a tiny forest that was owned by his father. He would clear streams and paths of debris, and take pleasure in the peace of the woods. He began to collect small pieces and to use them to sharpen his cutting points. Newman saw his friends cutting wood into spoons , and began to take up the hobby.

Nino Orlandi

Nino Orlandi, an exceptional artist is the one you should look for. The self-taught Italian artist makes realistic wood sculptures. The past 13 years were spent pursuing his passion and perfecting the art. Some of his work include The Book of Life, The Magic Mountain, and The Book of Dreams. You can find more of his work on his Facebook page.

Nino Orlandi's woodwork has a magical impact. The intricate details in the wood will be awe-inspiring. His work is technically flawless and artistically powerful. His wood sculptures are being featured in Woodcarving Illustrated's Winter 2016 issue.

Ruatepupuke

In 1905 in 1905, the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago bought an Ruatepupuke wooden sculpture. This carving is an early example of East Coast carving. It is notable for its low relief and its fully carved front facade. The Field Museum purchased Ruatepupuke II in 1905. Since then, it's been used for teaching purposes as well as other exhibits in the museum.

This style of carving, also called whakairo, reflects Maori culture. It tells the story of Ruatepupuke's son, Te Manuhauturuki, who was abducted by the god of the sea Tangaroa. Ruatepupuke embarked on the search for him after he was taken to the home that lies beneath the ocean.

Giles Newman's Saint Mary Magdalene

Three weeks ago I was in London just when the New Year began. The sky was cloudy and wet. I was partially stopped by the British telecom truck that prevented me from visiting the Newman statue in Brompton Oratory. I also visited the recently restored interior at Butterfield's All Saints, Margaret Street on my trip to London.

Danish oil finish

If you are interested in creating a wood statue with the perfect finish, then you must consider applying a Danish oil finish. The Danish oil finish is a safe and all-natural finish that is able to penetrate deeply into wood. It sets to form an outer layer of protection that is resistant to moisture and chipping. Danish oil is available in various colors and can be applied with either a rag or brush. After you have applied it, allow it to sit for 30 minutes before wiping off any excess, and let it dry for up to eight hours. It will give a matte appearance that is amazing on any statue after it is dry.

To ensure the wood's finish is protected To protect the wood's finish, apply Danish oil to wooden statue carvings. It is best to apply just one coat of poly since multiple coats could make the wood look too oily. One coat of poly is enough if you don't want the wood to be shiny. You must wait at the minimum six hours before applying the last coat of Danish oil to your statue carving.
